Michigan Paycheck Calculator

Use this free Michigan paycheck calculator to find out exactly how much you will take home from your next paycheck. Enter your gross pay, pay frequency, and filing status. The calculator estimates your federal tax, Michigan’s flat 4.25% state income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and any local city tax, including Detroit’s city income tax if it applies to you. Updated for 2026 tax rates.

How to Use the Michigan Paycheck Calculator

1. Enter your gross pay. This is your salary or hourly rate before any deductions.
2. Select your pay frequency. Weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly.
3. Choose your filing status. Michigan does not use filing status brackets like the IRS does, but it affects your federal withholding.
4. Add pre tax deductions such as 401k or health insurance if applicable.
5. Select your city if you live or work in Detroit or another Michigan city with a local income tax.
6. The calculator instantly returns your estimated net pay, along with a breakdown of every tax and deduction taken out.

Michigan Paycheck Taxes Explained

Michigan State Income Tax (4.25% Flat Rate)

Michigan uses a flat state income tax rate rather than tax brackets. Every taxpayer pays the same 4.25% rate on all taxable income, regardless of how much they earn or their filing status. This makes Michigan one of the simpler states to calculate withholding for since there is no need to figure out which bracket a paycheck falls into.
Michigan does allow a personal exemption that reduces taxable income before the 4.25% rate applies. The personal exemption for 2026 is approximately $5,600 per exemption claimed. Employers apply this exemption based on the number of allowances an employee claims on Form MI W4.

Federal Income Tax Withholding

On top of Michigan’s flat tax, the IRS withholds federal income tax based on your W4 elections, filing status, and taxable income. This follows the standard federal tax brackets and is the largest deduction on most paychecks.

FICA, Social Security and Medicare

Every employee pays FICA tax regardless of state.
Social Security is 6.2% of gross wages, up to the annual wage base limit.
Medicare is 1.45% of all gross wages with no cap, plus an additional 0.9% for high earners above IRS thresholds.

Detroit and Other Michigan City Income Taxes

This is the detail most generic paycheck calculators get wrong for Michigan. City income tax is separate from and in addition to the state’s 4.25% rate. Roughly two dozen Michigan cities levy their own income tax, and Detroit’s is the highest in the state.

City Resident Rate Non-Resident Rate
Detroit Approx. 2.4% Approx. 1.2%
Grand Rapids Approx. 1.5% Approx. 0.75%
Lansing Approx. 1.0% Approx. 0.5%

Verify current rates for each city against the Michigan Department of Treasury before publishing. City rates can change, and this table should be a reviewed, cited data block rather than an estimate.

If you live in a taxed city, this comes out even if you work outside it. If you work in a taxed city but live elsewhere, the non-resident rate typically applies.

Michigan Unemployment Tax (SUTA), For Employers

This does not come out of employee paychecks, but it is a cost employers should know. Michigan’s SUTA (State Unemployment Tax Act) wage base is $9,500 per employee per year, and rates vary by employer based on experience rating. This is a good bridge sentence into your employer and small business audience, with an internal link to your small business pay stub guide.

How Much Do You Take Home in Michigan? (Salary Examples)

Write these as short worked examples of three to four sentences each, using the calculator’s actual output so the numbers are internally consistent. The template below should be filled in with real calculator results before publishing.

$50,000 Salary in Michigan

A single filer earning $50,000 per year in Michigan, outside a local tax city, takes home approximately $[X] per year, or $[X] per biweekly paycheck, after federal tax, Michigan’s 4.25% state tax, and FICA.

$75,000 Salary in Michigan

Same structure. $[X] annual net pay, $[X] per paycheck.

$100,000 Salary in Michigan

Need Proof of Your Michigan Paycheck? Create a Pay Stub

If you are applying for an apartment, a car loan, or a mortgage, an estimate is not enough. Most lenders and landlords require an actual pay stub as proof of income. Our pay stub generator creates a professional, accurate Michigan pay stub in minutes, using the same 2026 tax calculations as this calculator.
